if-abfrage - was ist falsch

ich habe folgende funktion:
Code (perl): (dl )

1 2 3 4 5 6

sub printHTMLCellLeft { my ($file) = shift ; my ($value) = shift ; if (!defined $value) $value = " "; print $file "<td align=\"left\">" . $value . "</td>\n" ; }
und habe die if-abfrage eingebaut. dafür bekomme ich jetzt eine fehlermeldung:

(Missing operator before $value?)
syntax error at OSM/osm_jt.pm line 1024, near ") $value "

(1024 ist die if-zeile)

was ist da falsch - ich möchte nur abfangen, das value immer einen wert hat !
